1) There Does Not Exist – Æ3021
West Coast IPA, 7.2%

The inimitable There Does Not Exist out of San Luis Obispo continues to supply us with outstanding hoppy beers and lagers while keeping their prices more than reasonable. Not quite sure how to pronounce this one, but it does have a ligature in the title, which speaks to the linguist in me. Filled with Krush, Mosaic and Simcoe hops, whatever you want to call it – this beer is delicious.

2) Urban Roots – Edel-Pils
German Pilsner, 4.8%

“Edel” translates simply as “noble”, both in the sense of “dignified” as well as the Noble family of hops stemming from Germany and Bohemia. This Sacramento pilsner paying fealty to Old World lagers is indeed elegant! Clean pilsner malt, snappy herbal hopping and a hint of sulfur on the back end make for an altogether cheerful lager. A stately lager for a holiday weekend!

3) pFriem – Nectarine Golden Ale
Oak-Aged Sour, 7.1%

Inspired by true Pajottenland lambic, Hood River’s pFriem Family Brewers produces a stunning array of barrel-fermented tart ales with judicious applications of local fruits. Taking the concept one further, some of these funky and acidic beers are aged not simply in neutral oak, but rather in used wine barrels. The characteristics of Sauvignon Blanc in particular lend themselves well to such creations, accentuating zippy and zesty notes in the final measure. Nectarine Golden Ale boasts a layering of vibrant stone fruit as well, evoking late-summer impressions.
