Three and a half years ago, I traveled to Bend, Oregon for the first time so as to witness the total solar eclipse that was passing through there. To say it was extraordinary is not to do it justice. Imagine an eerie purple twilight falling upon the earth in the late morning, as if sunset were in all directions at once. Later that day, still stunned by the experience, I went to Boneyard’s tiny metal tasting-room and had an absolute blast – they make some of the finest IPAs in the entire Pacific Northwest. To cap off the experience, I had one final pint at the airport the following day while waiting for my flight – surely one of the best draft options at any airfield in the world. Hop Venom is a two-fisted Double IPA, replete with caramel malts and piney, resinous hops.
This one is for those who cannot live without rye. A dense blend of five malts (two of them rye) plus brown sugar as fermentables, then boosted by aging for a spell in Templeton Rye whiskey barrels, this possesses the most rye character that a beer can possibly have. Chewy, earthy, spicy and warming, Rye-On-Rye is a niche favorite that is a delectable treat every winter.
